Why it exists

A mattress designed backwards — from the morning

Most mattresses are designed as objects. The Arete 1500 was designed as an outcome: the way your back should feel at seven in the morning. Everything inside it answers to that brief.

It was made for sleepers who want engineering rather than promises — the couple who feel every turn the other makes, the side-sleeper whose shoulder needs somewhere to go, the warm sleeper who wants comfort without heat. Fifteen hundred springs respond to each of them separately; seven zones hold the spine level while they do.

The result is a particular kind of night: supported without hardness, soft without sinking — and the same on the last night of its long life as the first.

Inside the Arete 1500

Eight layers, each with one job

Open each layer to see what it does — and why it earned its place.

1 Hypoallergenic viscose fabric The surface your skin actually meets

A soft, breathable viscose sleeping surface, chosen because it is kind to sensitive skin and allergy-prone sleepers — the first and most personal layer of the mattress.

In practicePair it with a washable protector and the sleeping surface stays as fresh as the day it arrived.
2 Plush comfort quilting The first centimetre of softness

A quilted, multi-panel layer that gives the surface its immediate, welcoming feel and lets air move through the top of the mattress rather than being trapped beneath you.

In practiceQuilting is sewn, not glued — it is why the surface feels alive rather than flat.
3 Soft comfort foam The gentle introduction

A soft transitional foam that eases you from the quilting into the working layers below — comfort without the sink of an old-fashioned pillowtop.

In practiceTransitional layers are why a supportive mattress can still feel welcoming in the first minute.
4 Gel memory foam Pressure relief, without the heat

Memory foam moulds to shoulders and hips, relieving the pressure points that make you turn over; the gel within it draws warmth away, answering memory foam’s oldest complaint.

In practiceFewer pressure points means fewer position changes — and fewer interruptions to deep sleep.
5 Rebonded fibre insulator The quiet protector

A dense insulating layer between comfort and core. It stops the foams working their way into the springs, so both keep doing their jobs for years — a layer you never feel, protecting every layer you do.

In practiceThe presence of an insulator is a reliable sign a mattress was built for its fifth year, not its first.
6 1500-pocket, seven-zone spring system The engine of the mattress

Fifteen hundred springs, each in its own fabric pocket, each responding only to the weight directly above it — so your partner’s movement stays on their side. Seven zones vary the support down the bed: firmer under hips, gentler at shoulders, keeping the spine level in every position.

In practiceLie on your side: if your spine runs straight, the zones are doing their work.
7 Spinal support foam The foundation of alignment

A high-density base layer beneath the springs that gives the whole system something solid to work against — orthopaedic support built in at the bottom, where it belongs.

In practiceA spring is only as good as what it stands on; this layer is the floor of the whole system.
8 Anti-skid bottom fabric Stays exactly where you put it

A grip-finished underside that holds the mattress steady on slatted, platform and divan bases alike — no creeping, no re-squaring the bed each morning.

In practiceGrip at the base also protects the border: a mattress that cannot slide cannot scuff.
The material library

Chosen for the work they do

Nothing inside the Arete is decorative. Every material carries a responsibility to your night.

Pocket springs

The difference between a pocket spring and an open coil is privacy: each of the 1500 springs answers only to you. That means true motion isolation for couples, and support that maps your body rather than averaging it.

Against an open-coil core: an open coil moves as one surface, telegraphs every turn, and softens as a whole. Pockets fail privately and age evenly.

Gel-infused memory foam

Memory foam relieves pressure by spreading your weight across more of the surface. Infusing it with gel lets it do that job while conducting warmth away — cushioning for side sleepers, cool enough for warm ones.

Against plain memory foam: identical pressure relief, minus the stored heat that has sleepers throwing off the duvet at 3am.

High-density comfort foam

Density is what you are really buying in a foam: it is the difference between comfort that lasts eighteen months and comfort that lasts years. The Arete’s HD foam holds its medium to medium-firm feel season after season.

Against low-density foam: the two feel similar in a showroom. They feel very different in year three.

The foam-encapsulated border

Most mattresses die at the edges first. Encapsulating the spring core in a firm foam wall means the last inch supports you like the middle — a full-sized sleeping surface, and a firm seat when you need one.

Against a wire rod edge: rods resist for a while, then give suddenly. An encapsulated wall wears the way the centre wears — gradually and together.

Breathable quilted cover

A mattress must move roughly half a pint of moisture every night. The quilted, multi-panel surface and viscose cover exist to let that happen — a drier mattress is a warmer-in-winter, cooler-in-summer, longer-lived mattress.

Against a coated or synthetic-tight cover: sealing the surface traps moisture in the comfort layers, the quiet killer of mattress lifespan.

Rebonded insulating fibre

The unglamorous layer that decides how a mattress ages: it keeps the soft layers and the steel core doing their separate jobs. Its presence is why year five feels like year one.

Against no insulator: foams gradually work into the spring pockets, and the surface develops the hollows no rotation can cure.

The making

Built the slow way

The quilted surface

A multi-panel quilted sleeping surface, finished so the top of the mattress breathes as one soft, continuous plane.

The encapsulated border

The spring core sits inside a full foam surround, so the edge carries you as confidently as the centre — the whole surface is usable, to the last inch.

Built to be kept

High-density foams over a pocketed steel core, protected by an insulating fibre layer — a construction chosen for how it behaves in year five, not just night one. Rotate it regularly and it will keep its shape.

Built around better sleep

Who the Arete serves — and why

Couples

Individually pocketed springs respond one at a time, so movement stops where it starts. One of you can rise at six without the other knowing.

Side sleepers

The gel memory foam lets the shoulder and hip settle in while the zoned springs hold the waist — the recipe for a straight spine on your side.

Back & front sleepers

Medium to medium-firm support keeps hips level rather than sinking — the alignment back and front sleepers need most.

Warm sleepers

Gel-infused foam and a breathable quilted surface move heat and moisture away through the night, instead of storing them beneath you.

Those needing orthopaedic support

Seven zones of graded support and a high-density spinal foundation hold the back straighter for longer — support engineered in, not added on.

Sleepers who use the whole bed

The encapsulated border means the edge is as supportive as the centre — no rolling toward the middle, no dead six inches at the side.

The tension guide

Where the Arete sits

Tension is not a grade of quality — it is a fit, like a jacket. Here is how to find yours.

Soft
MediumArete 1500
Medium FirmArete 1500
FirmArete 1500
Extra Firm
Sleeping position

Side sleepers are usually happiest from soft to medium-firm, where the shoulder and hip can settle in. Back and front sleepers tend toward medium-firm and firmer, which keeps the hips from dipping.

Body weight

The lighter you are, the softer the mattress needs to be to respond to you; the heavier, the more support it must hold in reserve. A medium to medium-firm feel, like the Arete’s, suits the widest range of sleepers.

Spinal alignment

The test of a tension is simple: lying in your usual position, your spine should be as straight as when you stand well. Zoned support — firmer under the hips, gentler at the shoulders — does much of this work for you.

Sleep, understood

A short education in better nights

Why spring count alone does not determine quality

Count is only meaningful alongside coverage and construction: fifteen hundred well-made, individually pocketed springs arranged in zones will outperform a higher number of smaller, unzoned coils. Read the whole system — springs, zoning, what sits above and beneath them — not the headline figure.

Why pocket springs matter

An open-coil mattress moves as one object: press it anywhere and the whole surface responds. Pocket springs move as fifteen hundred objects. That independence is what makes support accurate and nights undisturbed — it is the single biggest upgrade in mattress engineering.

How support shapes sleep quality

You change position when pressure builds. The better a mattress spreads and supports your weight, the less often your body asks you to move — and fewer disturbances mean more time in the deep stages of sleep that actually restore you.

Pressure relief and long-term sleep health

Sustained pressure on the shoulder and hip restricts circulation, and your body answers by shifting — dozens of small awakenings you never remember. Relieving those points is not a comfort luxury; it is how a mattress protects the architecture of your sleep, night after night, year after year.

Why breathability is comfort

Overheating, not noise, is the most common reason we wake at 3am. A mattress that lets air and moisture through its surface keeps your temperature steady — which is why the Arete’s cover and quilting are as important as its springs.

Temperature and the deep stages of sleep

Your core temperature falls as you descend into deep sleep, and anything that holds heat against you resists that descent. A breathable surface and cool-running foams are quietly doing sleep science’s work: helping the body do what it already wants to do.

Airflow inside a mattress

Every movement you make pumps air through a well-built mattress — in through the surface, out through the borders. That circulation carries away moisture and warmth, keeps fillings dry and springs quiet, and is a large part of why a breathable mattress ages so much better than a sealed one.

Rotating your mattress

Rotate the mattress head-to-toe regularly — monthly in its first year is a good rhythm. It spreads the work of supporting you across the whole surface, so the comfort layers settle evenly rather than in one hollow.

The right bedroom temperature

Around 16–18°C suits most sleepers. Your body needs to shed a little heat to fall asleep; a cool room and a breathable mattress make that effortless.

Pairing the pillow

The pillow finishes what the mattress starts: your neck should continue the line of your spine. Side sleepers usually need a deeper pillow, back sleepers a lower one — judge it lying in position, never sitting up.

Preserving your investment

A mattress repays the care it is given

Five quiet habits that keep the Arete performing as it did on its first night.

1
The first season

Rotate the mattress head-to-toe monthly for its first year, then with the change of each season. Settling is natural; rotation makes it even.

2
Morning air

Throw the duvet back for twenty minutes before making the bed. A mattress releases overnight moisture in the first hour of the day — give it the chance.

3
The protector

A washable protector is the single best investment in the mattress’s long life: it keeps the sleeping surface fresh without sealing it. Choose a breathable one.

4
Cleaning

Vacuum the surface occasionally on low power, and spot-clean with a barely damp cloth. Never soak the mattress, and never fold it.

5
The long view

Stand it on a proper base, keep the habits above, and the Arete will hold its feel deep into its five-year guarantee and well beyond — most well-kept pocket-sprung mattresses serve seven to ten years.

Questions, answered

Everything you might still wonder

How is delivery arranged?

Doorstep delivery is complimentary. Once your order is placed we will contact you to arrange a convenient day.

What does the guarantee cover?

The Arete 1500 carries a five-year guarantee against manufacturing defects. It does not cover normal settlement of comfort layers, which is a natural part of any mattress finding its shape.

Which bases suit the Arete?

It performs on all conventional bases — sprung or solid divans, slatted frames (keep slat gaps modest so support stays continuous) and platform bases. The anti-skid underside holds it steady on all of them.

Do I need to flip it?

No — the Arete is built in ordered layers from sleeping surface to base, so it is not designed to be flipped. Rotate it head-to-toe regularly instead.

How do I care for it?

Rotate regularly, air the bed each morning before making it, use a washable mattress protector, and vacuum the surface occasionally on low power. Never fold the mattress.

Is it suitable for allergy sufferers?

The sleeping surface is a hypoallergenic viscose fabric, and a protector adds a further washable barrier — a combination that suits most allergy-prone sleepers well.

Will I feel my partner move?

Far less than on any open-coil mattress. Each of the 1500 springs is pocketed individually, so movement is absorbed where it happens rather than travelling across the bed.

How firm is it, honestly?

Medium to medium-firm: supportive enough to keep hips level for back and front sleepers, with enough surface give for most side sleepers. If you prefer a distinctly soft or a very firm bed, this is not that — and we would rather tell you so.

How does the 60-day home trial work?

Sleep on the mattress at home for up to 60 days. If it is not right for you, contact the studio and we will arrange its return — we would rather you had the right mattress than the first one you tried.
