Bouclé is a yarn with loops spun into it, woven into a cloth that looks like a soft sheepskin and feels like a jumper. It became the fabric of the decade for good reasons; here is how it behaves on a bed.
How it wears
A headboard is not a sofa seat. Nobody sits on it for hours, so the loops keep their shape for years. The base and surround take more contact from knees and bedding; a furnishing-weight bouclé, which is what we upholster with, is rated for that. Pets with claws are the one real risk, because claws catch loops.
Cleaning
- Vacuum with a soft brush attachment once a fortnight, following the direction of the loops.
- Spot-clean spills straight away with a cloth dampened in cool water; blot, never rub. Rubbing pulls loops.
- Mild upholstery shampoo on a test patch first, then the mark. Let it dry away from direct heat.
- Do not pick at a pulled loop; trim it level with sharp scissors.
Colour and light
Ivory and cream bouclé show the room's light beautifully and hide small marks better than a flat weave, because the surface is never uniform. Keep a bed out of strong direct sunlight, as with any fabric, to avoid fading on one side.
Choosing it
