Nara is a luxury Japandi upholstered bed: a wide padded headboard held in a slim timber frame, the fabric panel and the wood meeting in one clean line. The headboard runs wider than the bed base, so this wood-framed upholstered bed carries the settled, architectural presence of a fitted headboard without the fitting. Warm timber, soft upholstery, nothing added. Built to order in our West Yorkshire workshop in Double 4ft6, King Size 5ft and Super King 6ft, in your choice of 19 fabrics, with a front-lift storage base if you want one.
A wide wood-framed headboard that extends beyond the bed
The headboard is deliberately wider than the base: roughly a metre wider than the mattress at every size, with the overhang equal on both sides. It gives the bed the feel of a wall-width headboard, and a bedside cube tucks neatly beneath each extension. The slim timber surround frames the upholstered centre the way a frame holds a canvas, and it is this width, more than any other detail, that gives a bed with a wide upholstered headboard its calm, architectural Japandi look. If you have wanted an extra-wide headboard without a bespoke wall panel, this is the piece.
A softer take on Japandi design
Most Japandi beds are led by timber alone. Nara pairs the wood with upholstery, so the lines stay clean but the bed is softer to sit against and warmer to live with. It belongs in Japandi and Scandinavian rooms, Japanese-inspired bedrooms, minimalist schemes and neutral contemporary interiors, anywhere the brief is calm rather than decorative. Linen weaves and bouclé suit it particularly; the timber finish is chosen to match your room, and bedside furniture can be made to match.

The making of Nara Japandi Wood-Framed Upholstered Bed
Every bed we sell is made to order in our Yorkshire atelier — handcrafted by experienced artisans, upholstered by hand in the fabric you choose, and covered by our five-year structural guarantee.
Living with Nara Japandi Wood-Framed Upholstered Bed
Japandi and Scandinavian rooms first, then any neutral contemporary bedroom where the wall is wide and the brief is calm. The extra-wide headboard carries a large wall on its own; in a smaller room, choose the double and let the overhangs stand in for bedside furniture.
Keep the bedding tonal and let the timber edge draw the line. A low bedside cube beneath each overhang, one lamp, nothing on the wall above the headboard.
Linen in oatmeal or cream shows the weave against the wood; bouclé in ivory or latte makes the panel read softer. Order free swatches and hold them against your timber in daylight.

Made to order, explained
What does "made to order" mean for my bed?
Your bed does not exist yet. When you order, our atelier builds it — your size, your fabric — from the frame up. That is why it takes weeks rather than days, and why no two are quite alike.
Can you make a custom size or design?
Yes — made-to-measure is part of what we do. Speak with a Yorkshire designer and we will draw it for your room.
How does delivery work?
Doorstep delivery is free across mainland UK, Monday to Friday, with a signature on arrival. Choose room-of-choice delivery (£40) to have it carried to the bedroom, or white-glove assembly (£80) to have it built in place with the packaging taken away; both are options on this page. Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and islands and the Channel Islands are quoted individually before you order. Tell us about stairs and doorways in advance and we will plan for them.
How do I choose the right fabric?
Order free swatches first — we would rather you decide with the fabric in your hand, in your own light, before the atelier cuts it.
Still deciding on the cloth? Read our guides to choosing between velvet and linen and to how bouclé wears and how to care for it.
How do I care for the upholstery?
Each fabric has its own care guidance, included with your bed, and every frame carries our five-year structural guarantee. For anything else, our returns and warranty policies are linked in the footer.
What makes the Nara a Japandi bed?
Japandi is the meeting of Japanese restraint and Scandinavian warmth, and Nara is built on that balance: a slim timber frame around a plain upholstered panel, neutral cloth, clean proportions and no decoration beyond the join where wood meets fabric. The headboard is wide and low rather than tall, which keeps the room calm.
Is the Nara headboard wider than the bed frame?
Yes, deliberately. The headboard extends past the base on both sides, roughly a metre wider than the mattress at every size, so it reads like a fitted, wall-width headboard with a bedside cube tucked beneath each overhang. The base itself is a standard UK double, king or super king.
Can I order the Nara with a custom headboard width?
Yes. Nara is made to order, so the headboard width, height and base size can all be drawn to your wall before we cut anything. Tell us the wall width and the bed size you want and the workshop will confirm dimensions and price before you commit.
Will it fit up my stairs and through the door?
Check doorways, hallways, stairs and turns against the dimensions table on this page before you order. If you are unsure, send a photograph of the route to the workshop and we will tell you honestly whether it will fit and, if not, what we can make that does.
Do you assemble the bed?
Complimentary delivery is to your doorstep. Choose room-of-choice delivery (£40) to have it carried to the bedroom, or white-glove assembly (£80) to have it built in place with the packaging taken away. Both are options on this page.
Which mattress fits this bed?
Any standard UK mattress in the same size. The base height in the dimensions table tells you how high the top of the mattress will sit; add your mattress depth to it. Our own mattresses are made in every size to match.
What if it arrives damaged or is not what I ordered?
Tell us within 30 days of delivery and we repair, replace or refund in full and collect from your home at our cost. Photographs help us act quickly.
Can I see the beds before I order?
Yes, by appointment at the workshop in West Yorkshire. Free fabric swatches are posted to your home so you can choose the cloth in your own light before you visit or order.
Can this bed have storage?
Yes. Every bed can be made with a front-lift storage base, built to the same size and fabric as the bed; the whole platform rises on gas struts. Choose it under Storage on this page.
Every bed we make in this style is gathered in our Japandi beds collection.
The mattress it deserves
A bed frame is only half the decision. Our mattresses are made in the same tradition — pocket-sprung, hand-finished, and chosen for the way you sleep rather than by spring count alone.
